What I’ve Noticed by Putting Facebook Back on My Phone

Writer's picture: Lyndsie MooreLyndsie Moore

I know, ya’ll! I know! I was just recently singing the praises of taking the Facebook app off my phone! It was a great experience! 10 out of 10 would recommend! Seriously, it’s a great thing to do for yourself. However, Facebook is the only way that my son’s school sends out regular updates. I hate that this is the case. I would prefer email or text message updates and reminders. That being said, I realize how difficult this would be for the school to do, so I understand that Facebook is the quickest easiest way to keep parents, and students (who have Facebook) informed and up to date.

Due to school starting, I had to re-download the Facebook app on my phone. So it’s back. I’m really hating this for myself too. I tried keeping it on its own homepage, away from all my other apps, but I found myself not checking it. This lead to me missing an important message, so I had to move it onto a screen where I would remember to check it daily.

Guess what has happened! Exactly all the things I hoped that taking the app off my phone would correct. It has become my worst time suck! I try to limit myself to once in the morning and once in the evening, but man the ADHD monster seems to keep finding its way back to Facebook. It’s very irritating that I can’t seem to control my stupid adhd brain. There must be something in the coding of the app that grabs hold of my adhd and doesn’t let go. It’s frustrating to realize I’ve messed up my time management again. A symptom of adhd is time blindness: we are unaware of time passing or how quickly (or slowly) it passes. And let me tell ya’ll I have no concept of time. I have no internal clock at all.

I find myself spending more and more time scrolling Facebook, even when I don’t want to! I’m going to have to come up with a better plan to keep up to date of information from the school via Facebook without getting trapped in the time suck that it is! I am putting this out into the universe so that I can consciously put in an effort to do better and to use my time more productively; because I like many of you don’t want to fall victim to the life-envy and depression that happens when I unintentionally compare myself and my life to other people’s perfect Facebook appearances!

So I suppose I’ll leave us with this:

“The reason why we struggle with insecurity is because we compare out behind the scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel” Steven Furtick

Stay safe, stay rad, and wash your DANG hands!
