I know I’m not the only one who is struggling with their kid’s turning their brains into mush, by doing nothing but playing video games and watching tv and YouTube. I honestly don’t blame my kids. I totally get why they are so “bored” at home, especially after being so busy just a few weeks ago. This abrupt change for everyone has been weird.
The biggest way I’ve been trying to keep my six year old busy, not bored, and off screens has been to make him a weekly chore list for him to make a daily to do list from. This chore list includes things that are actually chores, but also play activities that he has to do. This way I can in a round about way make sure he’s actually playing and being a kid.
Here is an example of my son’s chore list:
Make Bed
Get Dressed
Brush Teeth
Free/Alone Time
School Work (His home school packet)
Draw/Color/Write a Friend
Read 20 (+) Minutes
Build With Legos
Walk the Dogs
Play outside
Free/Alone Time
Feed Pets
Pick Up Toys/Clean Room
Get Ready For Bed
These are what go on the list every week, give or take a couple. And this acts as sort of a master list for him to go by when he makes his to do list every morning. He usually gets a little leeway with his list; as in he chooses the order of what he does but he has to complete everything on his list every day. The exceptions to this are things that the weather affects or if he asks to switch out something specifically. We implemented this as soon as the school dismissed for the viral outbreak and it’s been a good easy way for BOTH of us to stick to a routine! It really helps us, and I hope it helps you! Stay home, stay safe, and wash your dang hands!
