Here are the absolute bare bones basics of what you need and how to resell clothing, shoes, and household items on the internet. This is compiled from my own personal trial and error, and experiences from my own reselling journey.
First you obviously need a product; this can be something from your own closet, something you buy from a yard sale, or something you buy from a thrift store. My advice is that you start off with something from your own closet, so that you aren’t putting money into your stock directly. Sure, you did spend money on the item initially but by now you’ll have gotten your use out of it.
Second you need something to take photos of the item with. Now I, personally use my smart phone. You could use a digital camera but it adds an extra step or more. Using your smart phone makes it easier to upload photos to your chosen platform.
Third, you will need to “stage” your product. How you do this is up to you, but things that I feel like work the best are either a flat lay, hung on a hanger on a solid color wall, or on a mannequin. When taking photos, the more, the better. Always take at least 3 photos of your product, if not more. The three photos you absolutely need of your products are the front, the back, and the size tag.
A flat lay is essentially laying your product neatly on the ground or another flat surface and photographing from above, as to look directly at the front or top of the item.
Hung up on a hanger on a solid color wall is my personal preference. It is this simplest, for me. It’s quick to change in between items this way. The way that I do this is that, I have a white command hook on a light gray wall. I then hang an item on a hanger, hang the hanger on the command hook, and take a photo of the item on my iPhone.
Displaying an item on a mannequin is the last way to stage a product photo. This is exactly what it sounds like. Put your product on a mannequin. Shoot.
Now that you have your photos on your computer (if you use a digital camera), or on your smart phone, you will need to upload your photos to your chosen reselling platform. For me, the platforms I use are Poshmark, Mercari, Depop, and eBay. There are many, many more apps and platforms out there, these are just the ones I consistently use. I have tried others and these are the ones I like. Along with uploading the photos onto the platform of your choice, you will be asked to describe your item in the listing, and how much you want your item to sell for. And that’s it.
That is the absolute bare bones basics of reselling. I don’t you could do it with any less. Now it’s obvious you can do it with tons more things, but that’s up to you.
