RBG, have you heard of her? Ruth Bader Ginsburg is the second female Supreme Court Justice. (She was also the first Jewish Supreme Court Justice.) She was appointed by Bill Clinton in August of 1993. You heard that right folks! The United States did not get it’s first female Supreme Court Justice until 1981. It took this country ONE HUNDRED NINETY TWO years to get around to putting a women in the Supreme Court. This does not sit well with me! Obviously, I was not alive during most of that history, and thank goodness that the first woman was appointed shortly before I was born, relatively speaking. I, personally think that ALL decision making bodies in this country should equally and appropriately reflect the population in which they represent.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the first female appointed to the Supreme Court in my lifetime. I was only 7, at the times, but I remember it being a big deal. Girl went to Harvard Law, Y’all! (What? Like it’s hard?) According to my quick Wikipedia search she was one of the few women in her class. I feel like that has to be the most intimidating yet badass experiences! I mean it’s Harvard and jokes aside that is a big deal, and to be a part of any minority has got to be intimidating. During law school she transferred to Columbia Law School and graduated at the top of her class. And by “at the top of her class” I mean she tied for first place; the literal top of her class.
So why do I care about this woman? Because she is one of my very first experiences with “Girl Power.” I grew up in the 90s, and that was a time of peace, love, and Girl Power! I mean just look at who our celebrity icons of the time were: Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and the “Holy See” The Spice Girls. I mean this idea of Girl Power has stuck with me through my entire life. It’s one thing from my childhood I am doing my best to instill in my daughter. I never want her to feel like she can’t do something just because she’s a girl.
Back to RBG, throughout her career she has been an advocate for women’s right, aka girl power. She’s known for her willingness to not back down from the male members of the Supreme Court. One thing that comes to my mind is that she is often associated with her dissents in court, (According to Google, a dissent is an opinion in a legal case in certain legal systems written by one or more judges expressing disagreement with the majority opinion of the court which gives rise to its judgment.) This has gained her the nickname “The Notorious R.B.G., which is seriously the coolest nickname you can have, if you ask me!
Ruth Bader Ginsburg is literally a boss! She authored the Court’s opinion on the admission of women to VMI (Virginia’s Military Institute). This said that it was unconstitutional to not allow the admission to women applicants based solely on their gender. She is believed to be the first Supreme Court Justice to officiate a same-sex wedding. The woman performs in operas (Non-speaking roles for the most part.) There is even an Opera about her and a colleague, Scalia/Ginsburg. She has authored two books. She supports the #MeToo movement. She has appeared in films. There are countless of books and films about her. The woman has her own Lego figure. She gives out Notorious R.B.G. shirts as gifts! Seriously, she’s done it all and has a sense of humor!
In my life she has been a symbol that women should be seen; they should be heard. Women need to stand up for each other. We shouldn’t tolerate being treated like shit; or ignored completely! We are valuable! She’s one of my first “Boss Babe” idols! I’ve always looked up to her for valuing herself, and other women, and not being afraid to dissent! She has helped to create a more even playing field for all women and that is important for everyone.
I’ll leave you with a quote that I love and think that we all need to take into account during this crazy time we’re living in. “Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.” -Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Stay safe, stay rad, and wash your DANG hands!
