My Tattoo Story

I’m going to start by saying my tattoo story is FAR from being over! This is just my story as it is as of late! It’s not an awesome story but it’s mine! I am glad to share it! Here we gooooo……

I got my first tattoo when I was 21 after a concert. It is a purple and black gradient 901 on the back of my right arm. My feelings toward this tattoo has been a journey! It is a representation of that “era” of my life. I think back on that time in my life as my first taste of independence, and my first experiences in adulthood. It’s a really nostalgic feeling toward this tattoo. Essentially my first glimpse of free choice. Later as I grew and moved away from the Memphis area, I began to really resent the placement of the tattoo; not the tattoo itself but the visibility of it. I was in a place in my life where I was very uncomfortable with other people’s reactions to it. It was once very common place at one point for creepy old men to touch my arm, or grab me by the arm to talk about my tattoo. I don’t mind talking to you about my tattoos, but please keep your hands to yourself. I even changed the entire set up of my wedding ceremony to keep my tattoo discriminant. It didn’t match the vibe of my ceremony. Ever since getting this tattoo I’ve been seeing the number 901 EVERYWHERE! I feel like I always seem to check the clock and 9:01. I have purchases totaling in $9.01 and it comes up in my life all the time. I have since learned about “Angel Numbers” (I have an entire post about angel numbers in the works). Basically an angel number is a divine message (take that as you will). So what does the angel number 901 mean? “A fresh start, new beginnings, keep a positive outlook” -According to Google. So I don’t know about you, but this is the most rad thing ever! I love it!

My next tattoos came in a pair. I got these on a whim. These are the only tattoos I’ve gotten on a whim. I was visiting one of my besties and at the end of the night I randomly decided to get hand tattoos. Yes, you read that right. I have two hand tattoos; one on the outside of each hand. I have love on my right hand and beauty on my left. I always tell people to not get them! I’ve had to get them redone since and they need to be redone again. The skin on the palm/outside skin of your hands regenerates so fast and you shed that skin so often that they don’t heal properly, and they fade extremely quickly. I lovingly call these my prison tattoos.

The fourth tattoo I got was with my beauty school bestie. We went together and got our own versions of sheers. I got small black sheers in a clip-art style on my left outer wrist. They’re just a cute little kitschy addition to what I call my beauty industry arm.

And my last tattoo (as of now) is my most meaningful one and my favorite. It is a teal line drawing seahorse. I got this tattoo with my mom. She had always wanted a tattoo and never got one. She was 69 years old and we were eating lunch after her second remission diagnosis after ovarian cancer. Ya’ll, my mom was a badass! I finally convinced her that she could totally live through the pain. After many cancer surgeries and chemo, tattoos are nothing in comparison. So, I took her to my friend’s shop and she got to meet two of my favorite people. We each got a tattoo that day. She picked a Pegasus from the flash art wall. I went in and described what I wanted. My friend/tattoo artist is an incredible artist, who understood my vision. I said “I want a line drawing sea horse, I want it the color of my shirt (I had a teal shirt on that day-also the color for ovarian cancer awareness), and I wanted to somehow incorporate her tattoo. My seahorse is absolutely perfect. It has the face of the Pegasus of my mom’s tattoo (so like an actual horse face) and it’s the perfect color, and he even was able to make it so perfectly “S” shaped. My mom’s name was Sandra. I’m literally obsessed with this tattoo!

Tell me about your tattoo story! I love hearing them!

Stay safe, stay rad, and wash your DANG hands!
