My Advice To Anyone Getting Married

Writer's picture: Lyndsie MooreLyndsie Moore

By trade I am a Hairstylist, and previously worked as a photographer. I also have been married myself; I’ve been married for 8 years and counting. I have attended and worked so, so many weddings. This is the advice I wish I had been given, and had taken myself. So this advice comes from a place of experience and love. I tell this to any unmarried friends or clients who ask. And I will give this advice to my children. I will also give this to my many nieces and nephews; should they ask.

Anyone who has been married for a long time can look back and tell you that the ONLY thing that lasts/matters years and years down the road, is the photos! Essentially a wedding is a party. And it’s obviously up to you how big or small your ceremony is. But 30 years from your wedding day the only tangible thing, is the photos. So the advice I always give is to invest in those!

Here is a list of what to invest in on your special day:

  1. Wedding Dress

  2. Suit -Not a Tux, because a man will always need a suit in the closet

  3. Hair

  4. Makeup

  5. Photographer

  6. Optional Flowers

Everything else that could go into a wedding is extra! I think every Bride should feel her best and wear whatever wedding dress makes her feel like a goddess on Earth! If a pants suit makes you feel like the boss ass bitch you are on your special day, WEAR IT! If a fabulous, flowing gown with a cathedral length train makes you feel like a true queen, WEAR IT! If a sundress and flowers in your hair is what makes you look like the forest nymph you feel you are inside, WEAR IT! My point here about the dress is that, your wedding day is special; and you should feel the most beautiful you’ve ever felt on that day. Whatever that is for you, whether it’s a low budget dress or the most expensive gown of the century, spend your money on that! It will be worth it to look back on the photos and remember how beautiful you felt!

As far as the suit for the groom, I always recommend this for the simple fact, that in real like men don’t have as many occasions to wear a tuxedo as they do a suit. A man can wear a suit to a job interview, another person’s wedding, or a funeral. It is just more practical.

When it comes to your hair and makeup, it comes back to you feeling the most beautiful on your most special day. You also need that time before the ceremony to relax and just be pampered. It’s your time to clear your mind, and calm those pre-ceremony nerves. Invest in someone or a team of someone who you are confident in, and that will take care of everything for you. I notice most often this is the time when the bride gets the chance to calm down, sit down, and prepare herself mentally for the ceremony ahead.

Flowers are a bonus item for me. If you feel like a bouquet of flowers makes your bride style look complete, by all means spend as much or as little money on that as you like. This is just a finishing detail.

And MOST importantly invest in your photographer. I canNOT stress this enough. I didn’t spend enough on my own wedding photographer. That is my biggest regret from my wedding. I hate my photos. I hate them. I have ONE displayed in my home. I regret not investing in the one lasting part of my ceremony. Invest in a photographer that has a style that you like, that you vibe with, that takes charge and knows your vision. I suggest seeking out someone on Facebook or Instagram, looking at their work, and scheduling at least one session with them before your engagement photos, just to see how you fit together.

Seriously, invest in only these things, go to the courthouse, or where ever your dream setting is, take the most amazing photos of you and your partner, and go on your honeymoon. Or use the money you would have otherwise spent on a huge ceremony and reception and invest in a house, or a car, or something else with longevity that you can enjoy as a couple; much longer than one single event. The photos are what lasts. The love is what lasts. I think it is much more important to look back on that day with love and happiness, than to be like me and have regrets.

Stay safe, stay rad, and wash your DANG hands!
