May Book Recommendation

Writer's picture: Lyndsie MooreLyndsie Moore

For my birthday this past year I was gifted a book that I couldn’t read fast enough; and I because obsessed with the author. Girl, Stop Apologizing, by Rachel Hollis is literally the BEST hype book of all time! I couldn’t put it down. I took notes from it to improve my quality of life and businesses. It is one of two books I keep on my desk in my office, (the other is Girl, Wash Your Face, also by Rachel Hollis) to keep me inspired and on track. Honestly it was one of the best birthday presents I could have gotten.

Rachel Hollis, the author, calls this book “A shame-free plan for embracing and achieving your goals” and I couldn’t agree more! In this book she sets out in three parts, how to best become your best self. She does it in a way of your loving, encouraging best friend. She’s real with you, she’s painfully honest with you, and the way she writes makes you feel as if you know each other and she genuinely cares for you.

In Part One, Rachel addresses the excuses that all women make about themselves, about their lives, and about their family. She addresses them, and then she sets you straight. She tells you why they’re just excuses and they do not rule you. Those excuses should never hold you back. A lot of them are things that we can do nothing about, so why let them keep you from achieving your goals.

In Part Two, she recommends behaviors that everyone should adopt. And I’m going to tell you, Part Two is honestly the hardest for me to do. She tells us it’s not only ok but imperative that we stop asking permission, and to ask for help. Um, hello Rachel, we haven’t met in person, (even though I adore you to no end.) but how did you know that I am forever refusing to ask for help? I mean I am so prideful and independent and it’s like cutting off a body part for me to ask for help. It usually doesn’t even occur to me to ask for help. And for this, I thank you for telling me to shut up and ask for help. I mean everyone needs help. And I appreciate the fact that you address this because I know, I’m not the only one. I feel like this is hard for women in general, because we are “supposed” to be able to do it all; work like we don’t have children, and care for our children and family, like we don’t work. There’s no way to live up to this standard. So again, thank you Rachel, for talking about something I feel like we, as women, aren’t supposed to talk about.

In Part Three, she shares some skills to acquire to get to where you’re going. In this part, she talks about 6 advantageous skills everyone needs and can benefit from. The skills are planning, confidence, persistence, effectiveness, positivity, and “Lead-Her-Ship. Once you start implementing these behaviors/skills, you will have everything you need to achieve the goals you have in life.

I love that Rachel Hollis, doesn’t tell you how she is “perfect” and you should follow this “xyz” formula to be a millionaire. She tells you how she got to where she is, and how she plans to grow and continue to improve herself and her life and the life she (and her husband) is able to provide for her family. She shares her highs and her lows. She shares the things that she has proven works for her, and this attitudes, these behaviors, and skills, work for the team she has built in her company, and for many others who have adopted them. She is able to make you feel important, empowered, and honestly badass. She makes you feel like she believes in you personally! I cannot recommend this book enough! Go get it! Read it! Live it! And in my opinion Rachel is a goddess and can do no wrong! I strive to be like her, and I feel like this book will make you feel the same!
