With Father’s Day having just passed, I thought I’d share with you guys how my family celebrates. I know every family who celebrates has their own idea of how to spend Father’s Day. We like to do something just a little different from all of the families that I know of, and I really love our tradition.
A few years ago, we decided to not waste money on extravagant gifts. We, as a family, decided that we really would rather spend money on experiences, as opposed to “things.” The year we decided this Father’s Day was one of the first holidays that we celebrated. And ya’ll, let me tell you, I struggled on what to get or do. I scoured the internet, and local stores, and I never could decide on what do to.
Father’s Day finally came and I still hadn’t gotten anything or decided what to do. So there I was, with both kids in tow, (then 3 years and 8 months) walking up and down the aisles at Walmart, for the millionth time, with not an idea of what I was going to do. Finally, while strolling near the toy section of the store and it hit me! I bought up a ton of water balloons, a bunch of water guns, a baby pool, and sunscreen.
So, every year we have a water day. We spend the morning/early afternoon in out backyard having fun. We team up and have water balloon fights, the kids play in their pool, and we shoot each other with water guns. It’s so fun! We have so many laughs! It is one of our favorite things about summer.
Another part of starting the day off this way, also leaves the afternoon open for naps and allows us time to spend together as an immediate family, but we can also spend the afternoon and have dinner with our extended family. This let’s us celebrate my husband’s father. I highly encourage you to try this out for any of your holiday celebrations; it doesn’t have to be Father’s Day, that’s just what we do! Does your family have a unique way to celebrate a holiday? What are your Father’s Day traditions?
Stay safe, stay rad, and wash your DANG hands!
